Intelligent Material Solutions (IMS) is developing a novel technology for vehicle automation and guidance systems in collaboration with the U.S. Dept. of Transportation and the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center. The Intelligent Highway sensors developed through this collaboration enable real-time vehicle guidance using intelligent markers placed on roadway surfaces and elsewhere in the environment. The system can be incorporated into a variety of roadway markings, identifying vehicle locations (e.g., stop bar, milemarkers, etc.) providing specialized message content to support driver information and control applications.
Our sensor platform transform utilizes enivronmental markings to determine operating characteristics of the car, including position and motion characteristics and to provide operation actions of the car, including motion and speed (e.g., acceleration, deceleration, braking, stopping, etc.) and position (e.g., turn, forward, reverse, etc.).
In addition to providing real-time roadway information which can be used directly with vehicle guidance the Intelligent Highway Marks can be also used as a calibration tool for GPS enabled vehicles. The IMS Automated Highway Platform can provide accurate location information to existing GPS systems when in environments with poor satellite signal such as tunnels, underpasses, and cities or due to inclement weather conditions.
